AAUW-Kenosha October Program

October 18: David Grignon, Tribal History Preservation Officer, “From Keshena to Kenosha: The Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin,” co-sponsored by the KPL and KPM, 4:00 p.m., at KPL Southwest Branch

Join David Grignon, Menominee Tribal Director of Historic Preservation, as he speaks on the past, present, and future of the tribe, as a First Nation whose ancestral home has always been within the boundaries of the state of Wisconsin. The Menominee tribe is among the few tribes in Wisconsin whose origin stories, burial and other sites have placed them in the area now known as the state of Wisconsin, and parts of the States of Michigan and Illinois, for 10,000 years.

The Menominee Historic Preservation Department was created by the Menominee Tribal Legislature in 1991 to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Menominee people, particularly to preserve the Menominee language which is sacred to the Menominee people. In 1999, the Historic Preservation Department received the unique status as an official designation as Tribal Historic Preservation Office from the National Park Service enabling the Menominee Tribe to protect its cultural resources.

What is NCCWSL?

What is NCCWSL?

AAUW’s annual conference, National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), brings together more than 800 young women from around the country for two and a half days of leadership training, networking and inspiration. This year’s event will include sessions on career development, mentorship, financial literacy, racial-justice activism and more. Participants will have an opportunity to explore post-graduate programs, careers in a variety of disciplines (especially STEM) and other opportunities for their future.

NCCWSL’s Mission

The mission of AAUW’s NCCWSL is to foster a moment that ignites a powerful movement. Year after year, our conference brings together college women from across the nation for an immersive multi-day experience of leadership training, inspiration, and networking. We strive to cultivate an inclusive and equitable space where attendees can enter as passionate leaders and depart with the skills, confidence, and perspective necessary to pursue their goals and drive meaningful change.

Who Attends NCCWSL?

NCCWSL attracts a diverse group of young leaders who are highly engaged on their campuses: They are involved in student government, academic and pre-professional organizations, identity-based and social-justice clubs and political activism. One in four is majoring in the STEM fields; other popular majors include business and the social sciences. Most are rising juniors or seniors, who are at a pivotal point as they explore their next steps after graduation. The young women represent the rich diversity of their generation.

NCCWSL by the Numbers

  • Roughly 50% of NCCWSL attendees are women of color. Many are first-generation college students.
  • 1 in 4 NCCWSL attendees major in the STEM fields, followed by majors in business and the social sciences.
  • Nearly 500 colleges from 48 states have sent campus leaders to NCCWSL.

What do you get with your registration?

  • Three nights lodging in traditional style A/C accommodations
  • Meal plan to include 2 breakfasts,1 lunch, and 1 dinner
  • Standard linen, parking permits, and administrative fees are included

Scholarships Available

Hence, we take immense pride in offering up to 100 national scholarships annually, aiming to ensure that a diverse range of individuals can benefit from this empowering and transformative experience.

There are national, state, and local branch scholarships available to attend NCCWSL. You are encouraged to apply for both national and state scholarships. You may also apply for a local branch scholarship if they are available where you live.

Giving Opportunities for Individuals and Branches to National

AAUW Funds explained: What are the AAUW National Choices?

Please take a moment to review the following donation opportunities. Go to AAUW.org and click the “Donate” button if you are interested in making a contribution. Thank you for your support.

AAUW Greatest Needs Fund (9110)

This fund allows AAUW to respond rapidly, in our communications and advocacy, to critical issues affecting women as they emerge — whether it’s a new threat to Title IX, an opportunity to partner with employers, or the dawn of a social justice movement like #MeToo. When donations are not restricted to fellowships or specific projects, we have the dollars we need to pivot as the national dialogue shifts — and get our work covered by major media outlets such as the New York Times, CNN and Fortune.

Greatest Needs is also what fuels our groundbreaking research and effective advocacy work to pass fair-pay laws and other key equity legislation.

Giving to Greatest Needs is a great way to ensure AAUW’s continued visibility, relevance and sustainability. On the donation form, please select “Use my gift where it’s needed most” to contribute to this important fund.

Education & Training Fund (4450)

Addresses the barriers that prevent women from thriving in school and pursuing the careers of their dreams. That means championing equal access to education and ensuring women can learn in environments free from harassment and discrimination.

Leadership Fund (4452)

Supports the effort to bolster the number of women in top roles across industries by addressing systematic biases and giving women the skills and resources they need to lead.

Economic Security Fund (4449)

Promotes women’s livelihoods through advocacy for fair-pay legislation, researching the pay gap, training women to negotiate for the salaries they deserve, and advising employers on fostering fair cultures.

Governance and Sustainability (4451)

Donating to the Governance and Sustainability Fund enables AAUW to function as effectively and efficiently as possible—following the latest best practices for hiring and governance and incorporating state-of-the-art technology into our member database and other systems.

NCCWSL 2022 UPDATE: A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE!!!

The generosity of AAUW members and their enthusiasm for supporting our next generation of emerging leaders for equity has allowed us to fund ALL nine (9) of the candidates submitted by our Wisconsin Branches for the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL)!! In addition eleven (11) Afghan Refugees currently enrolled at Universities, expressing interest in participating in the conference have been funded as well! Special thanks to the Northwoods, Fort Atkinson and Tomah Branches for their significant contributions. National AAUW scholarships funded five (5) of the Afghan women. This is a total of 25 recipients!!

Speakers Headline Successful State Convention

The DEI-focused (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) convention brought together a wide array of speakers for convention-goers to enjoy. We were honored to have AAUW’s CEO Gloria Blackwell and Wisconsin’s Poet Laureate, Dasha Kelly Hamilton to kick off our Friday evening. Dr. Renee Gralewicz delivered a passionate keynote speech on Saturday on the effects of colonialism calling on us to advocate for social justice especially for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Finally, Dr. Susan McFadden left us with an inspiring closing about memory and hope.

Our breakout speakers kept us engaged on a variety of topics Saturday afternoon. Several of the presenters have forwarded information that we will put in a resource section of the state convention website. We’re working on that as well as working on gathering, editing, and figuring out how to share the videos that were recorded of the convention. A reminder: our facilitators were not video professionals so be kind when you do get a chance to watch the videos!

Thank you to all the individuals & branches who donated to the auction for AAUW’s Greatest Needs Fund and/or made direct monetary donations. $5350 was raised this year.

The Latest Badger Brief is Here!

The fall issue of Badger Briefs hit the inboxes of our members this past week.  The change from paper to electronic is a new endeavor that will save some trees, appeal to members on the go and will help our state organization utilize our dues in more effective ways.

President Lyn Hildenbrand

This issue feature an article from our resident, Lyn Hildenbrand.  Be “in the know” by reading about AAUW’s national goals.  “Through Work Smart our collective goal is to provide salary negotiation workshops online to 1 million women by 2020.” writes Ms. Hildenbrand.

Also addressed is a SWOT analysis of AAUW.  Click on the link to this issue and find out what has been identified as our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and  Threats.  By identifying who we are and where we can go, success can be achieved.

In this issue is more information about this year’s convention! Learn about the efforts of Denise Anastatio and Gretchen McCarthy, the Co-Chairs and their group of doers.

With many more articles by great contributors this first effort by our new editor Tamar Morgan is informative, entertaining and inspirational.
